An excellent pull adventure! Definitely written by someone who loves adventure fiction. A fun read!
I've enjoyed very single piece of fiction I've read by Frank Schildiner, including this excellent novella. Plenty of great action and characterization. There are also a number of cool Easter Eggs for pulp fans, such as the appearance of a New York warehouse owned by a certain doctor and colleague of Wade's who uses his wealth and genius to fight crime. Fans of Robert E. Howard, L. Sprague de Camp and Lin Carter, and Mary Shelley will also enjoy this one. Considering that Frank is a die-hard fan of Philip Jose Farmer's Wold Newton Universe, these references should come as no surprise to those who are familiar with his work. After reading this and Pro Se's previous Thunder Jim Wade book, I will definitely be buying Altus Press' reprint of the original stories.
I'm a fan of pulp, I listen to old time radio, and I like larger than life heroes fighting evil. Obviously so does Frank. He writes with the passion of a fan and captures the voice and feel of classic pulp. This story could have been published in the 30s without changing a line. As with the genre, this is a standalone novella and no prior knowledge is required. The Easter Eggs reveal themselves on multiple levels depending on your prior exposure to fictional characters.
Frank's writing is a good starting point for the pulp curious as well as long time reader.
This tight novella was my introduction to Thunder Jim Wade pulp character, and its a doozy. Frank Schildiner throws a bevy of inventive villains and hurdles at our heroes, and the action is nonstop. Especially good is the climactic, brutal fight scene between Wade and the main baddie's superhuman son. Schildiner, a practitioner of the martial arts, knows his fights. The tale is also peppered with crossover references that don't get in the way of the story, but show that Wade & Co. exist in a larger universe of heroes and villains. I'm looking forward to the next Wade thriller from Schildiner. Keep 'em comin'.!
